A quick (well, kinda) update
Haven’t been posting much lately — been working instead, and scouring Monster for a different job. There’s a bit of a reason, though. why I am posting now instead of working…
So this morning I woke up, as usual, and grumbled, as usual, and went to feed the cats, as usual. Pulled a can of cat food out of the cabinet, set it on the counter, pulled a fork out of the drawer, set it on the counter, and went to open the can.
and promptly sliced open my left hand on the sharp can lid.
The cut is only about a centimeter or two long, but it’s on the fleshy part between thumb and index finger and went all the way through the skin. Naturally, it bled a LOT. Didn’t hurt, though, until I ran it under the tap to rinse out foreign material.
After a bit of rinsing, I grabbed a couple paper towels, applied direct pressure, and held my bleeding hand above my head. (I was an Eagle Scout. Had to cover basic first aid.) I pushed the bedroom door open with my foot and called out to Fred.
“Honey, can you finish feeding the cats?”
(he’s still a bit miffed that I didn’t start off “Honey, I’m gushing blood all over. Can you please finish feeding the cats?”)
After a little discussion, we decided that it was probably best to go to the hospital.
Long story short, I got three stitches in my left hand. It’s still a bit numb over there from the Lidocaine, and I’m not supposed to use that hand (hence the slower-than-normal one-handed typing) so I took the rest of the day off from work and am having Fred do dishes and laundry in my place. There’s no damage to the nerves or tendons, though, so once the laceration seals up and the stitches come out everything will be back to normal (though there may be a scar).
But I’m still here – just typing slower than normal – and the blood is all cleaned up so the kitchen no longer looks like a crime scene. (we cleaned up the bedroom, too, especially where I opened the nascent clot while trying to tie my shoe and dribbled blood all over the floor).
Fred has suggested that maybe this is Somebody’s way of making me take time off from work. He may have a point — I have been working a hell of a lot recently — but on the whole I’d rather the divine nudge have taken a slightly less bloody approach.
More on all this later – I need to go change this bandage.

Dude – ouch. Seriously. My wife sends her sympathies – she understands stitches, of course :> She points out that you’ll want to massage the area once it’s healed up – you’ll get scar tissue as deep as the cut, and it will hurt like a bitch until you break it up.
Scouring Monster? Please, don’t scare me – really?
Just looking for something that’s a little more focused. This all-things-to-all-people approach gets old, fast.
What a crappy place to get cut. Good luck on the search. The all things to all people is what I like about what I do. I like diversity, but I hate people just heaping tons of stuff on me all at once.
So sorry about the cut, Jim! I did a similar thing washing dishes — a glass broke underwater and I didn’t know till I seized it and it seized back. Unfortunately, this was during the Minneapolis years, so I had to clear all the snow off my car before I could drive to the ER.
Years later, though, no aftereffects and the scar is barely visible. So take care of that hand and I’m sure all will be well.
Can you engage a surrogate Monster scourer in the meantime?
