Holy carp!
Burke excommunicates St. Stan board
!!!!!!!
Guess that solves THAT problem.
However, Burke has no control over other affiliated rites: perhaps St. Stanislaus could go Maronite or something.
(and i think i need a new category on this.)

Wow! I haven’t heard of an actual excommunication in a long time. Sounds like someone’s taking the current Pope’s “it’s okay with me if nonconformists leave the Church” pretty seriously.

Well, Burke is a hard-liner; he’s one of the bishops who threatened to withhold the Sacraments from Roman Catholic politicians who didn’t exhibit a rabidly anti-abortion voting record. (Curiously, there was nothing mentioned of the death penalty in that particular threat.)
If I understand this particular situation correctly, though — and as a lifelong Protestant I cannot claim a mastery of Roman Catholic ecclesiastical law, so don’t say I didn’t try to warn you — then these people are being excommunicated for desecrating the Eucharist, and only the Holy See can excommunicate for that particular offense. But it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
St. Stan is planning a Christmas Eve mass. I’m certain there will be reporters crawling all over the place.
