Wikipedia nears a million articles
Seems that last night, the English Wikipedia had its 950,000th article created.
Not bad, eh?
Now consider that they didn’t hit 500K until March 17 2005.
Now consider that anonymous users have been unable to create articles since December 5.
Now consider that the 900,000th article was only created on January 4.
At this rate, they’ll be to a full million by the end of the month… and that’s JUST main articles (no Talk pages, User pages, etc.) and JUST IN ENGLISH (none of the other 200-or-so language editions).
No wonder I’m so far behind on my Watchlist!
UPDATE: almost forgot to mention: there’s a real-time count of articles at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Statistics, in case you’re interested. If the 950K barrier was breached just after midnight GMT, then at the current rate of expansion it’s taking just over 18 hours for each thousand new articles. !!! (Please don’t refresh that link too frequently: it’s a big hit on the servers.)
