jeem rambles about tax inequality

So I’ve done my taxes. After crunching, I was pleased to notice that I’ll be receiving modest refunds from both the IRS and the state Department of Revenue. (The state refund is more modest than federal, but the feds withhold quite a bit more than MO so that’ll always be the case.)

And then I crunched some more.

IF Fred and I were legally married, then the feds would be keeping less than half of what they actually are keeping. Our refund would then be roughly six times higher.

IF Fred and I were legally married, then the state would be keeping two-thirds of what they actually are keeping. Our refund would then be roughly twelve times higher.

Both the federal and state governments would be keeping fifty to one hundred dollars more if I had claimed Fred as a dependent.

Clearly, from this evidence and from other smaller benefits granted through legislation, the feds and the state government want to encourage stable long-term domestic relationships. They just don’t want to encourage any such relationship in which I can participate. Which has to mean something, right?
