Last day at the old job, w00t.

My desk is (mostly) ready for its next inhabitant; my office computer is getting crufty so it’s about to be re-built; my desk phone is about to get unplugged; and the last-minute requests and/or tributes are trickling in. (Best tribute so far: a big tray of espresso chocolate chocolate chip cookies.)

Yesterday the rest of the I.T. department held a little snacky-type gathering in the office kitchen, where everybody swapped me-stories. (It would have been nice if somebody had told me about it before I started working through my office food reserves, but I won’t complain too much.) Afterwards, we headed for a very informal happy hour at the Tap Room, which was very similar to the snacky-gathering except with pints of beer instead of chips and salsa. (I had the Biere de Garde, which was delicious.)

The new job doesn’t start until Wednesday — I am not going to start a new job on my birthday or Fred’s birthday, even if said job is super-cool. In the meantime, Fred and I will probably head to Pere Marquette Park, and my family will be getting together for a two-birthdays-and-a-new-job dinner at some point over the weekend.

As much as I’ve bitched and moaned about this place, it is actually somewhat difficult to go. This was my first “real” job, so I’ve learned quite a bit here about group dynamics and how things really work and how to best document things (keep it short and unambiguous), and I’ve developed some solid friendships through turmoil and luser-grief.

That said… the new place is a dramatic improvement — better salary and benefits, for one, and almost no operational inertia, for two — and I was falling into a grumbling-underpaid-misanthrope rut anyway. It’s time to move on.
