Yes, we had an earthquake last night. It woke us both up, shaking the bed and rattling windows and doors. (The windows were rattling as though a strong gust had hit them, but then again the interior doors were rattling just as hard. Plus, shaking bed.) A couple drawers shimmied open. No damage for us, though neither of us could really get back to sleep afterwards.

Of course, it’s the only thing anybody can discuss at the office today. I’m just mildly surprised that nobody so far has mentioned December 3, 1990, when half of my sixth-grade class was mysteriously absent.

Insomnia sucks, but you knew that.

I’m really not sure why, but lately I haven’t been able to get to sleep. None of my usual tricks have been working – alcohol just makes me snippy, technical manuals yield brilliant insight into the complex inner workings of whatever they cover, and “forearm exercises” just make everything sticky and chafed. (cough cough.) Instead, I spend a couple hours a night tossing, turning, and listening to the boringest radio station I can find.

On occasion, as I lay there, I get a flash of inspiration. They’re usually along the lines of “You can save five minutes’ commute time by taking Compton instead of Grand!” or “You can fix that pesky permissions issue on your spam filter with hidden fields!”.

Last night, though, as I lay there, I somehow got it into my head to start a blog. This isn’t the first time I’ve done something like this – I had an online diary thing going for a while – but I let it fall by the wayside. I’ve grown more “responsible” or something since then, so we’ll just have to see if I can stick with it.
